The entire point of that article is to disprove the claims that hydrogen peroxide is a cure-all. Make sure to read the bottom part….which states it is irritating to skin and mucuous membranes and shouldn't be used as a douche.

USING PEROXIDE AS AN CLEANING AGENT FOR YOU VAGINAL AREA IS NOT AND GOOD IDEA. PEROXIDE WILL IN FACT CLEAN THE AREA OF GERMS AND BACTERIA BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT WILL CURE AN INFECTION. PEROXIDE WILL DRY OUT THAT AREA AND MAKE YOU THINK THAT THE INFECTIONS IS GONE. BUT 2-3 DAYS LATER IT WILL COME BACK. WHAT KIND OF INFECTION IS IT? AND JUST BECAUSE IT MAY GO AWAY DOEN NOT MEAN THAT IS IT CURED. TRY BATHING IN EPSOM SALT, DRINKING CRANBERRY JUICE, AND MONITOR YOUR DIET. GOOD LUCK

That's actually pretty disgusting. For one thing, douches are bad and can cause you to get infections because they kill all the good bacteria that you need in your vagina. Also, peroxide will probably make you sore and dried out, and it will probably burn while you're doing it. I do not think it's a good idea at all.

your body can clean itself naturally, you should never use a douche , you could mess up your pH balance and have even worse problems.(pelvic inflammatory disease). peroxide stinks and I'm thinking will dry you out, so there goes your pH balance out the window

Some physicians state that a diluted hydrogen peroxide douche can be used to control vaginal yeasts, bacteria, and viruses. I have been a healthcare teaching assistant for 20+ years and I volunteer at a womens health center and I don't recommend you try this.

Even the 3% hydrogen peroxide sold in stores can cause tissue damage. If you've ever peroxided a wound, you notice the tissue looks white and dead afterward. Sure, peroxide foams when you put it on a wound. Why? It reacts with catalase, which is an enzyme released by damaged cells. Not just human cells–peroxide foams when you put it on a cut vegetable too.

Vaginal mucosa is very delicate. And the vagina is essentially a self-cleaning organ–any douches, rinses, or medications put in there will disrupt its balance. Peroxide can actually, with its pressure, force micro-organisms deeper into the tissues (that's why the bottle says "don't use on puncture wounds").

You're really not supposed to use anything besides plain water near the vulva, and you shouldn't insert any fluid (besides semen, during sex) into your vagina, even if it claims to kill bacteria. Peroxide can be pretty harsh on your skin, and it could kill good bacteria that your vagina needs to stay healthy. It's a self cleaning organ, really. All you need to do is gently flush water over your vulva and use some mild friction (with your hand, or a washcloth). Using any type of douche can actually push bacteria further into your vagina, causing it to reach the uterus.

Don't douche! It kills the good bacteria that live in there. So if you do that, then you give bad bacteria more of a chance to multiply. So go to your OB GYN to find out exactly what's going on if you think you have an infection. They'll give you some pills – a quick fix!

  9. dawn says:

my dr at planned parenthood said that it actually can help to develop the good bacteria too. any reply to that?

  10. dawn says:

Body nnt cleaning itself. dr didnt say douche cuz that does push bacteria up but jus puting it in 2 clean.

From what i understand BV is caused by many anaerobic bacteria that colonize the mucus membranes in the vagina. Some form a biofilm that helps them resist hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid which are secreted by the healthy bacteria within the vagina. If you want to get cured from BV you must get a prescription of antibiotics which produce an enzyme that dissolves the biofilm that protects the bacteria. Once this biofilm is gone then the hydrogen peroxide will work. The biofilm is a possible explanation for recurrent episodes of BV.
