Antibiotics (oral pills or intravaginal treatment) work for about 2 out of three women, like such as Flagyl or clindamycin, but they can leave you more prone to candida infection (thrush).

You should get a proper exam, just to check that there’s no serious underlying cause, like pelvic inflammatory disease, and just to be sure that it’s really bacterial vaginosis.

Some women find it goes away on its own (self-limiting bacterial vaginosis).

But it’s important that you get checked out, if you haven’t already.

Don’t use yoghurt, it’s an old-wives tale; the bacteria in the yoghurt (lactobacillus acidophilus) are unlikely to have any effect; this type of bacteria shouldn’t be present in a healthy vagina.
Lactobacillus-L. crispatus and lactobacillus L. jensenii are bacteria types found in the vagina, treatment based on these two types, might be beneficial, but not those found in yoghurt.

I have just reseached this myself after yet another bout of this irritating condition. BV is a PH imbalance. Some say it is from unprotected sex, others say it’s an STI and others say they think its from an allergy to semen etc etc. Regardless of what it is it is curable and I have found a cure! Mix a tablespoon or two of good quality plain yogurt with all the good bacteria in it, break open and mix in the contents of one Inner Health Plus capsule (the capsule with all the good intestinal flora available in the fridge at your health food shop). Fill a small syringe with the mix and fill your vagina with it. You may need to fill the syringe a few times depending on it’s size, be gentle and be sure to use it all. You could try a tampon but I found the tampon swelled too fast and it was too painful to insert. You may need to do this 2 or 3 times (I did it at night so it wouldn’t leak out) and it will get rid of it. You may get an occasional recurrence but this really does work, it harmless to your vagina and cheap. I then took a capsule a day just for my intestinal health. Google ‘natural cures for bacterial vaginosis’ and you’ll come across a forum like this one with heaps of women’s experiences and cures. Choose what sounds good for you. Interesting that most women do not recommend using antibiotics or other doctor prescribed treatments because they only work for a short time and the BV usually comes back with a vengeance. When I heard about this I thought it was just too simple to work but gave it a go anyway. And VOILA! No more BV!! If you have irritated skin around your vagina try applying a bit of zinc cream to the area. It’s harmless and very soothing (available from the supermarket in the sun screen section or your chemist) Good luck!
