I think I might have bacterial vaginosis, what should I do?

I’m 16 and I ‘ve been getting whitish/yellowish discharge and it smells really gross (kinda fishy) and I didn’t know what it was. I asked one of my friend (left out the gross part) and she said that I might have a yeast infection. So I searched online then I read this one post about vaginal yeast infection and I read that what I have is not an infection but a bacterial vaginosis. I don’t know if this is serious and I’m afraid to tell my mom so I can’t go to a doctor. What sould I do?
And my family is kind of short financially this year, is there another option besides going to the doctor?

You’re going to have to get over it and tell your mom so she can schedule a doctor’s appointment for you. Whether you have a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis (BV), you’ll need to be treated for it. If it’s a yeast infection they will probably prescribe an antifungal like Diflucan that you take as a pill. If it’s BV, they will probably give you a week’s worth of antibiotic gel that you insert nightly. Either way though you have to go through a doctor, so just tell your mom, "Mom, I’ve noticed that something’s not right down there, I think I need to go to the doctor." I know it’s embarrassing but you need to get treatment so you’ll just have to deal!

Part of growing up and being mature means you talk to your mom and/or see a doctor when you need to. BV does not go away on it’s own. You need antibiotics and you need to get them from a doctor.

    Signs of yeast infections:
    White, cottage cheese-like discharge
Swelling and pain around the vulva
    Intense itching

    Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
    Itching or burning
Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva

Since BV and yeast infection have very similar symptoms it is best to visit a doctor and get it diagnosed properly. Only once you are sure it is BV you can go for conventional or natural treatment.
