Yes. They recommend you eat yogurt while on antibiotics to keep the good bacteria in your stomach. The antibiotics kill some of the good bacteria that kills off the yeast.

Yes. Antibiotics kill off the good bacteria that lives in your vagina and intestines. The good bacteria balances your yeast growth. You always have yeast with you. So that is why people eat yogurt with lactobacillus acidophilus in it, to replenish the good bacteria in their intestines after antibiotics. You can get the same thing in capsules to put in your vagina from the health food store. Or use a antifungal cream from the drugstore. Yeast is very opportunistic and grows whenever it can. (bacterial vaginosis is similar to yeast overgrowth, it is the overgrowth of a bacteria instead of yeast – need good hygiene).

bv is from having a lot of sex… or sexual partners.. or douching.
I dont think you can get it from antibiotics… idk.. hope you get better and make sure you use all the meds your doctors give you even if your symtoms go away=)

No, antibiotics don't cause bacterial vaginosis. Technically, they don't cause yeast infections either. What antibiotics do is sometimes upset the balance between what we condsider the good or useful bacteria and those we don't, or the bad. There is a balance, which they call the normal flora- existing on our skin, our colons, and the vagina of women. When you had an infection that required the use of antibiotics, you already had an imbalance. Antibiotics unfortunately don't discriminate between the good and bad guys either, they just kill whatever gets in the way. Things like yeast normally live on your skin all the time. They are kept in check by the other bacteria, and of course your own body. Antibiotics wipe out most of what's inside you, and that gives the stuff on the outside a chance at getting out of hand. That's most commonly the yeast, from your hands to other spots. Bacterial vaginitis just means the bacteria in the vagina have gotten out of hand, but it's not the yeast- it's some other sort of bacteria. There are millions of them to pick from, too. Nobody knows really why it will happen to some ladies and not others, either. It's also possible that your partner did the donating of the bacteria. Male anatomy doesn't quite leave them as vulnerable to the same sorts of infections that will make life miserable for women. It's also possible that the bacteria that caused the original UTI just managed to migrate as well. In the vagina, they would not be as easily killed by the antibiotic. There are also types that are not suceptible to the antibiotic used to kill UTI bacteria. So once you kill off everything else, that's all that is left behind. I'm sorry you have the problem, and it sounds really silly to say you will need another round of antibiotics, but that's what you will need. Fortunately, treating it will also help eliminate the chance of you getting a yeast infection for the same reason. Once you finish the antibiotics, be sure you eat live culture yogurt for a few days afterwards to help replenish the good gerbies. That's the best way to ensure you end the cycle, and a good practice to take anytime you have to take antibiotics of any sort. Until they manage to make antibiotics that can specifically target a certain kind of bacteria, and only that kind, there's not much else you can do.

1. You may have chronic bacterial vaginosis.
2. The number one cause is vaginal douching (cleansing) – so stop it if that's what you're doing.

Taking antibiotics CAN throw off the bacteria count in your body and leave you subjective to getting bv. The chances of the antibiotics causing this is HIGH. Seems everytime I have to take Keflex for an oral abcess, I get bv. As long as I stay with penicilan, it doesn't throw off my female parts but it happens every time I get Keflex. You do not get bv from a toilet seat and it IS NOT an std. Some people get it from wiping from back to front. If you douche, you increase your chances of washing away good bacteria that holds down the count of bad bacteria. Same with antibiotics…it wipes out the good bacteria and allows the bad to grow. Next time you take antibiotics, just take probiotics with them, they keep the bacteria count normal and you can get them at your drug store. Don't feel bad about having bv, some of us get it more often than others. Good thing you went to the dr. to treat it. Hope this helps.

Yeah, antibiotics can cause yeast infections, the bacteria down there keeps the system clean, and sadly antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria. Diarrhea is common as well. This is why I recommend (and do) eating yogurt if I ever need to take antibiotics. I don't know if this will cure a yeast infection because I never had one (knock on wood). Break out the monistat and remember to eat plenty of yogurt next time you are on antibiotics.

It's possible. If it's an antibiotic that's just a do-all (as in it doesn't target a specific bacteria and just a wide range), then there's a chance it could affect the amount of good bacteria down there, lowering it. This would allow yeast (which is always present in small amounts, but is kept under control by these bacteria) to grow and thrive which causes a yeast infection. This won't always happen, and your yeast infection could be for other reasons, but it is a possibility.

No they would cure it. You might be thinking of a yeast infection which is totally different. It is caused when you kill too many of the good bacteria in your vagina and the fungus takes over. It can be caused by too many antibotics, diabetes, clothing, and it can be sexually transmitted.
Yeast infections are caused by same little bug that causes athletes feet, jock itch, diaper rash, thrush and more. You will need a yeast infection treatment to cure it which is an antifungal drug.
If you are not sure if this is a yeast infection or this is the first time you have had these symptoms please see a doctor for diagnosis. You might have something else. I hope this helps
