bacterial vaginosis?

well about two months ago i had a STD check and found out i had trichomosis..the doctor prescribed my flagyl for seven days twice a day to get rid of it..after i got done with the medicine i noticed that it smelled totally different down there..like before it had a real strong not so good smell..but i thought it was normal b/c it had always been like that..so then someone told me they use flagyl to treat BV so i knew that i had to have had BV and that just cured it..well recently ive had kind of another smell..nothin near as bad as before but i did one of those home screening things that are new and it says my ph level was 5.5…which says could be BV…why would i have it again if it got treated before? and how accurate are those home screening things..im def. gonna go to the health department monday..but i was just wonderin for the time bein..

Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection in the vagina caused by a type of bacteria (germ). The vagina normally contains a lot of "good" bacteria, called lactobacilli (say: "lack-toe bah-sil-li"), and a few other types of bacteria, called anaerobes (say: "ann-air-robes"). Too many anaerobes can cause bacterial vaginosis. We don’t know why the anaerobe bacteria overgrow and cause this infection.

    How is bacterial vaginosis treated?
It can be treated in one of several ways. Your doctor may prescribe pills for you to take by mouth, or a cream or gel to put in your vagina. It’s important to use your medicine exactly as your doctor tells you.

If your doctor prescribes metronidazole (brand name: Flagyl) or other medicines, don’t drink any alcohol while taking the medicine or for 24 hours afterward. Combining alcohol with these medicines can cause nausea and vomiting. Even the small amount of alcohol in many cough syrups can cause nausea and vomiting if you’re taking metronidazole. Also, be sure to tell your doctor about any other medicines you are currently taking.

The cause of BV is not understood. It can develop when something, like sexual contact, disrupts the balance between the good bacteria that protect the vagina from infection and the harmful bacteria that don’t. It is not clear what role sexual activity plays in the development of BV, but BV is more common among women who have had vaginal sex. But BV is not always from sexual contact. We do know that certain things can upset the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina and put you more at risk for BV:

Having a new sex partner or multiple sex partners
    Douching
Using an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control
    Not using a condom

Bacterial Vaginosis ?

So, I was diagnosed again with BV, the first time was back in June, I was treated with Metrogel but now it came back and now I am back with the same gel again, the discharge is there and sometimes I feel pain in my abdomen. My 2 pap smears have tested abnormal but my hpv is negative. Will the gel help to clear this BV?
Any suggestions?

Usually the treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis is antibiotics such as metronidazole or clindamycin. I am sure the gel will work but if not ask your doctor about either of the antibiotics I listed.

  2. Me says:

There is this stuff called enzara that you get on line, clears is up(and the odor ) in about a week. The trick is… you’ve got to stay on the pills and drink plenty of water. They are herbal and no prescription is needed. It worked for me, hope this helps!

  3. Nicci says:

you should really start to eat more yogurt. this will help prevent you from getting BV.

  4. Alli says:

Maybe you should try asking your doctor for metronidazole (brand name is Flagyl). This is usually the number one prescribed antibiotic for BV.

I personally used it a few years ago when I had BV and it worked great. I haven’t had a problem since then.

    Good luck to you!

Is just an infection from too much of a bacteria in the vagina. The dr should have explained it to you. It causes discharge and may have an odor. It is not a yeast infection, which itches.

  2. soyabean88 says:

white stuff is fine. It’s normal to have that ALL the time, but you’ll get more of it while you have the infection. Continue taking the medicine and it’ll be in a way less amount when the bacteria is gone. They suck, I know.

Its not uncommon for people not to have any "symptoms" per se at all. Most commonly, women will notice an unusual or foul odor and maybe additional smelly discharge. Most don't have discomfort.

You vagina is at baseline colonized by bacteria that maintain it at a certain level of pH. Sometimes various things-douches, intercouse, bubble baths, etc) can change things around where the percentage of each kind of bacteria gets messed up, causing bacterial vaginosis. Depending on what type of antibiotic you were given, you will probably will not notice any differences aside from decrease in odor and any side effects related to the antibiotic. If you are a person prone to yeast infections, you may want to eat yogurt with active cultures during this time as the antibiotic can sometimes put people at risk for this type of problem on the back side of treatment.
